Every two or three years I have had to have the carb. rebuilt. I haven't done an ace job of winter storage and the wonderful mechanic, now retired, has told me a lot of the problem is caused by the fuel blends sold in WI.
Can a non-mechanically inclined geezer learn to do the rebuild himself? Are there instructions somewhere or better a video tape?
Thank you.

The best manual is of course the Mercury Manual it,s a little pricey but if you purchase one and follow the instructions and photos it should be a piece of cake, it's very well illustrated

Here's a tip. I have an old 25 Merc pull-start tiller I use for duck hunting and fishing. I've always run high-octane fuel in it since I bought it used in '93. I also mix the oil 40:1 (1 pt. per 5 gal. gas instead of 6.)
I use this motor year-around and have never touched the carb except for a new fuel pump diaphragm. I think the hi-test gas is better quality, and since it's diluted it with oil, it doesn't make the motor run hot and doesn't appear to have caused any damage. It starts real easy too, even in cold weather which you have lots of. You may want to try those things after you rebuild the carb.

Follow up. If I recall correctly there are manuals published besides the one by the engine manufacturer. Am I correct in assuming you mean the one published by Mercury? Also, I think the editions changed around 1990My ser. # is OC224493. I've always assumed the motor to be 1990. Can you tell me if I'm right? Again, thank you.

Yes, I would buy the manual from Mercury, I am not sure on the serial number but goto a merc site with your serial number and check for the number manual you need then shop around for price and be sure to ck ebay
