Posted last week, with no replies. At the risk of irritating you guys I'm re-posting my problem.

1990 Merc. 9.9: I found out there is a shaft extension kit to make a 15" = 20" at a local boat show. The dealer said parts and 2 hr labor = about $300. Sound right? My father and I have moderate mechanical abilty and a manual. The dealer said aligning the parts and shimming the drive constitute the hardest part.

thanks. mfglmg@msn.com

and they will warranty the work! I'd pay the $300
cuz all new gears will cost a lot more. shimming
can be a little tricky.
my .02
M.Y.

Hold on guys....unless I'm terribly terribly wrong, changing a short shaft 9.9 to a long shaft if quite easy. Drop the lower unit, pull the wtr. pump, pull out the short shaft, insert the long shaft, unscrew short shift rod and insert long rod and set proper hight. Put water tube extension on. Attach extension and bolt onto motor. This process is abreviated here on the post but I'd like to know where the shimming comes in. The only thing I know of that has to be measured is the shift rod height. extension kits for 9.9/15 will run between $215 and $255 from OEM depending on year. Price sounds about right but I don't know what shimming the mech is talking about.

OBJim
