Howdy, I have a 1990 Mercruiser 3.7 with alpha one drive. First launch of the season didn't go as planned. Turning the key only resulted in a click from slave solenoid and no crank. Battery is fully charged. Jumped slave solenoid and still just a click no crank. I removed plugs and turned over by hand, no liquid in cylinders, not seized. Removed starter and bench tested, everything seems to be operational. When I was originally attempting to start by key, the solenoid would click in neutral but not drive or reverse, which I took as the neutral safety switch working properly. I was about to order a new starter before deciding to pull out and bench test. I am not sure where to go from here. I am thinking I should reinstall starter and ensure all connections are clean and tight. maybe jump starter itself while installed?!??! What could cause it to no even attempt to crank?!?

I would do as you said, reinstall and make sure all connections are clean and tight. If still nothing maybe but one of those cheap jumpstarts that have the trigger, and put hot side right to starter and a good ground. Then if nothing replace starter.

Just because the starter turns on a bench doesn’t always mean it’s still good and will turn an engine over. Just like a motor will run great on muffs then like crap in the water.
