1990 Monterey Fill in the cracks

I have a 1990 Monterey SSC2700 Cabin Cruiser I am getting back into ship shape condition and while removing the bottom paint to get a fresh surface, I found a few anomalies. The first you see are fiberglass spots where someone did blister repairs and really really they all look good other than they did not gel coat them. The other issue you can see in my photos is a series of cracks in the Gel coat, which I believe are due to stress and very thick gel coat.

My repair questions are:

1. Do I grind out each crack and add tape to tie it altogether?
2. Do I grind the whole area and tie it together as one lager repair where the cracks are spidering?
3. I plan on using Bi-directional cloth and criss crossing the layers, should I consider a material like carbon fiber as the last layer to increase stifness.
4. Is Gel coat required if I am going to bottom paint it.
5. I would like to use standard Epoxy, will I have trouble getting gel coat to adhere after the repair is cured.

I have a little composite experience from being and aircraft mechanic and dumb enough to build a kit plane in my garage.

As always your input is greatly appreciated.

Hello Salty..

IMHO .. I would grind off the gel in the repair area.. layup with mat/VE resin.. fair and Bottom paint.

NO kevlar/carbon or any other exotic glass is needed.

So no gel coat required with the bottom paint applied and maintained? The makes this repair much easier than expected.

Hello SaltyD..

If you repair the cracks correctly .. then no Gel is needed...

Salt,

Welcome to iboats. Looks to me if the bottom is in otherwise good condition, you could go straight with bottom paint. If you want more osmotic protection then use an epoxy barrier coat prior to bottom paint. Interlux makes the barrier coat material.
