I am trying to find a rattle can of paint that matches that on my Stern Drive. I understand that there is a company named Moeller that makes it, but have not been able to find the exact code for the proper paint. The outdrive is painted with a dark gray metallic paint. Any help on determining the correct paint to order would be appreciated.

I used ford truck and van paint from Wal-Mart. However the moeller paints match pretty well

I haven't had good luck with Moeller Paint products. I painted my 1993 Evinrude 25 with the stuff, and it flaked off after a couple of years, and I did all the required surface prep. I still use the Moeller Zinc primer, but not the finishes.

My best luck has always been the OMC/BRP factory paint, it just works better.

If you go to the BRP parts site, they may have a paint number for your Cobra drive (its that brownish charcoal color you're after)

You can also try the folks over at sterndrive.com, they have a Cobra section and someone there may have the OMC paint number you're looking for.

I found the following, it is made by BRP and says it is for 1987 and Up Johnson Outboards. Does anyone know if that is the same paint used on the 1990 Cobra Sterndrive? OMC 11.5 oz. Spray Paint Metallic Charcoal 777173

Not quite, the Johnson paint is a charcoal "black" while the cobra is more of a brownish charcoal.

Tell you what, Let me have a go at finding this for you, I report back here what I find.

Weekend:

I searched the BRP parts catalog and have a paint number for you - BRP 395127 "Metallic Charcoal" OMC Cobra Outdrive (rattle can) - Any Evinrude dealer can order this for you.

The OMC number 777173 you have is probably the same, but don't buy any of the old OMC labeled rattle cans, OMC went out of business over 15 years ago and there is still a lot of (old) NOS cans on dealer shelves, insist on the BRP labeled cans

Moeller has a 395222 - Metallic Charcoal for OMC Cobra

I would first pursue the BRP paint first, the formula is just better than the aftermarkets.

To remove any further doubt, buy one can and paint a test piece, if it's wrong, you're only out 12 bucks.
