Hi,
I have been out of the boating seen here for some time. looking to get back in.
I am looking at Purchasing a 1990 Reinell 192M Cuddy with a 5.7 OMC cobra out drive for 5k.

The boat is very nice and has been well maintained, and nicely equipped.

Big issue..Cobra out Drive.. I have never had one and I know OMC is gone..
Should I not even consider this? The price is 5k boat is in excellent condition. My only hang up is the OMC drive.

Are the 5.7 parts standard Chevy components?
The Drive operates fine.. I am just afraid of no parts/service availability.
Are the cobras that bad?
We would be using the boat mainly to Ski/tube standard boating stuff..

Thanks

The blocks are the same- GM. Many other components are OMC-specific, as is the outdrive and all of its parts. It's a collection of mechanical devices. Mechanical devices break. The manufacturer of this combination of mechanical devices has been out of the business for more than a decade.

I wouldn't touch it.

If it's a King Cobra run away as fast as your feet can carry you. Search the net & try to locate parts for that relic.

Looks like the general option is stay away.. Dame shame as the boat is nice..
I guess there will be others..

Any one like OMC out drives?

I'm pretty sure that the on the drive if you had to reposed you can get the SEI drive and adapter. It runs a out $1800

I see cobra drive parts all over the place. Not as much as mercruiser but they're available. They do cost a more.

On the engine side it's all the same as a merc except the shift stuff.

I would want to get a merc but if you really like the boat, it's a fair price, and you think it's been taken care of go for it.

Ayuh,.... and the Igntion,...and the Manifolds,... and the Couplers,... Carbs to a point,..
The commonality really pretty much Ends at the Long Block.....

Owning an OMC is just expensive added Frustration to the life of folks wantin' to just be Boaters....

Right on Bond-o. I mean why bother when u can find a Merc Or a Volvo & not have to worry about chaising down parts, finding a mechanic that can work on it if u can't do the work yourself, etc., etc., etc? Merc & Volvo ain't perfect, but OMC's are just a pain in the a*s. I'm headed for a refit which will cost me about 2 grand. Nice.

Great drives, when properly adjusted and maintained.
Sucky drives when not maintained and out of adjustment.
Major parts are NLA
Mechanics are MIA
