Like many people these days and in our present economy,I am operating on a modest budget and will have to strongly consider only a used motor that I can pay cash for. I am wondering about Evinrude/Johnson 15 to 25 HP motors
made from 1985 to 2000. How well do they run,and how dependable have they been in the past? It would have to be short shaft, manual start two stroke motor! I am considering possibly buying my motor from AFA Marine
out of Florida,...website is www.smalloutboards.com. I have checked them out and I would not be afraid to buy a motor from them,...and I am willing to pay the shipping if necessary. Why AFA Marine? I can't find the motor I want around my area so these people seem to be my best bet so far. Just waiting
for the right motor at the right price! I may have posted a similar thread like
this before, but it has been a long time since I have discussed the subject.

Don't be afraid to go back to the 1970's for any of those motors. Actually, I'd say back to the 1950's, but that scares some folks. Any Johnson/Evinrude 9.9/15 hp is a pretty good motor. They were built from 1974 on. The 20-25-30-35 hp are all basically the same motor and are all good. Any of these built after about 1978 is a good bet. I prefer the thru-hub lower unit, but don't let that deter you from getting one without. The 20/25 hp didn't get thru-hub until 1985. I think the 30 hp always did as did the 35 hp.

Well,...to tell you the truth,I need at LEAST a 15 on my rig. But I would gladly take a 1975 or later 20 HP Johnson/Evinrude motor as long as it is short shaft and manual start. I would prefer not to go older than 1975 on
either a 15 or 20 HP motor if I can help it. The only thing that concerns me about a 1950's motor is that most,if not all,of them require a pressurized tank.
Where in heck would you even find such a tank nowdays? I would be happy with a 20 HP motor on my rig,...don't think I need a full 25 HP that my boat
is rated for!

Yesterday while visiting a local bait shop who also sells Evinrude and Johnson outboards,I discovered a mid 1960's Evinrude Fastwin 18 motor that has tiller
steer, short shaft, and both electric and manual rope start. The bait shop owner is asking $450.00 for the motor but would let me have it for $250.00
since he would give me $200.00 trade on my 9.5 Johnson. The motor has sat
in storage for two years, but was tuned up and water pump changed prior to
that and after taking it in on trade from a local fisherman(fishing lady,I mean).
Having said all that, how dependable were the Evinrude Fastwin 18 motors?
Are they worth considering? Are they easy to work on? The previous owner painted the motor all black,...but I would like to get it back to good ole Evinrude blue and white. The bait shop owner is going to get the motor in a test tank and make sure it's pumping water as it should and running right
BEFORE he sells it to me. I trust the guy because I have been buying bait from him for almost 14 years.
