Hey,
I am new to this whole boating thing but was given a boat by my father-in-law. We ran the boat a few weeks ago, and it was okay, but we went out a couple days ago and it would start up fine but when we tried to put it in gear and move forward the engine would die. I think it is something with the choke and the idle, but I am not sure how to adjust those. Any ideas?

Adjustments are done when putting back together after servicing the parts, not when something goes wrong.

If things are not working properly then something has changed and you need to find out what that is.

My take on these motors is to make sure the compression and spark on all cylinders is good along with the timing of that spark, and then look at the fuel.
Could be simple as water in fuel or old fuel, but it sounds like fuel problems. It is simple to check fuel pumps, but sounds like you may need to go through the carbs.

A service manual will help you out a lot if you plan on working on it yourself. It will save you time and money and help you decide what you can handle yourself and what you need others to do.
