It may be a little late but i just bought a grady white with a 1990 yamaha 150 2 stroke "precision blend" outboard. How good are these motors and is there anything quirky about them that i should know about? I've had several outboards but never a yamaha. the motor has very low hours as well having only been run once or twice a year but i talked to the marina that maintained it and they had completely torn it down to clean out salt build up and replace the shift rod as it was moored. The cost was $5000! no machine work was done. runs good in the tank. thanks.

Re: 1990 Yamaha 150 Input

I've got a Yam 140A V4, although it's 4 years older than yours, it's still a strong unit. I have re-built it recently due to a piston picking up, I think this is a fairly common problem, due to a fueling problem. Keep it serviced, keep an eye on the amount of oil it uses and enjoy it. I was told by a Suzuki dealer that he used to race the yamaha 'V' engines and he described them as pretty much bullet proof! I treat the fuel pump as a service item, make sure i clean and set up the carbs properly every season and away we go. Mine rattles a bit at tick-over, which I've been told is fairly normal for these engines, but once it's revving it loves it...smooth and powerful all the way up to 40mph+!!

I think that you should have a good unit there, enjoy.....

I have two 1985 150 2 strokes - I love them. I have never heard anything bad about Yamaha outboards. My last motor was a Yamaha 2 stroke - ran perfectly for many years. My brother has
one, and loves it - his last motor was a Yamaha. I know a big comercial fishing family in Fla. who all run Yamaha's. They convinced me to get my first one - they are very popular, #1
in my book - great choice!

They're great motors as long as you keep clean, fresh fuel in them. That means fuel/water separater type cartridge filters and fuel stabilizer like Stabil or Seafoam and Yamaha Ringfree all the time. Good Luck!
