1991 150 intruder spitfire

I have owned this boat for several months and have had no problems until yesterday while on the water. when we first started out everthing was fine but after about an hour the engine started smelling very rich. It was almost bad enough to burn your eyes but it stopped smelling after about 30 minutes and started smoking very heavy. I did run out of gas on one tank and had switch tanks but I don't think that would have anything to do with smoke. Also on the way back to the dock I had a hard time getting the gears to engage to move forward. Any ideals would be a great help.

Maybe try describe the symptoms better.
Describe the motor, is it still running on the VRO system?
When was it last serviced, carbs rebuilt?
Got a water seperator?
Using temp deck tanks?

Just not enough info to provide anything more than guesses.
