I'm looking at purchasing a 1991 Bayliner 19' Cuddy, with a Force 120 on it...

I'm new to outboards (always had I/O's) ... I have no idea what kind of fuel efficiency a boat like this gets... So...

How many gallons per hour should it use roughly at cruising speed? (and what speed IS cruising speed for this boat?)

Thanks guys/gals!

Father in law had one. Cannot comment on the gas usage, but my advice, RUN LIKE HELL. Worst motor and support for motor I have ever seen.

I'm usually not one to jump in on these, but that Force is going to be a nightmare if anything goes wrong with it. Nobody wants to work on them and finding parts is murder. To answer your question, it's probably going to average somewhere around 1gpm, 12gph at cruising speeds.

A 20 year old Bayliner with a Force 120 is a combination of components widely reviled on this forum. In general the fuel economy of a boat is pretty pitiful. My semi educated guess would be around 6 gph @ about 25 mph.

Yeh, I hear what you guys are sayin' about no-one liking the Force engines... The boat + 2 Force 120 engines is only $1000. I figure for that money I could probably put a different outboard on it if it came down to it.

I live in a popular boating area (San Juan Islands) so engines are easy to find generally speaking.

Which brings up another question. Is there anything significant involved with swapping the Force out for a Mercury or something?

Should just be a matter of hooking up the gas/electric/cables right?

Anyway, thanks again for the advice! :)

Controls, guages, etc. Problem is, is that bayliner really worth putting a newer engine on it? Not knowing prices down there, if it's $1000 and both engines work it's probably worth it to just run them until they're dead and then look for a new boat as opposed to repowering that one. If you get one or two years out of it then you came out ahead.

hah, yeah, i hear what you're saying... To be honest, my budget is small (im on disability + a low paying job) so I need an inexpensive boat, but I want something 19-21ft with a Cuddy. I dunno, Bayliners are plentiful, and aside from the Force powerplants sucking, I really don't have much of a problem with them. I've had a few, and yeah, their not high quality, but I never had any real problems with'em.

I dunno, I'm going to go see it in person and get a better feel for the condition and stuff, but I'm not in a hurry to buy though so we'll. I would like to get something better, just not sure how far my budget will get me really.. ($1500-2000 or so)

Thanks for the replies! :)

Lucky b*****d!

lol, sorry :) ... Just moved here from Wisconsin last year. Being a boat lover, living on an island surrounded by boats and not having one has been !@)#(* killing me :)

If you're ever looking for a place to live, I can't recommend this place more! :)

Fuel "efficiency" would not be my choice of words when it comes to a 2 stroke outboard of that vingage. Fuel inefficiency would be more like it. On plane at about 20 MPH, you will get 2-3 miles per gallon if you are lucky. It may well be worse depending on winds and tides, but it will not be significantly better.

To be honest, given your situation, I have to ask the question: Can you really afford a boat at all and does whatever health condition that you have that's placed you on "disability" really allow you to safely go boating?

Boats are nice-to-have luxuries if you can afford them. They are not necessities, nor are they cheap to own and use no matter what. If you buy a POS because it's "all you can afford", what are you going to do when it breaks?

That's not your call.

I'm not making a call. I'm stating a fact and asking a question. As the OP did not state that he lives on an island and he didn't say anything about being a guide or commercial fisherman and therefore using a boat to earn his living. A boat is therefore not a necessity.

I'm asking him to think about the difference between "need" and "want". The "call" is his and his alone.

Re: 1991 19' Bayliner Cuddy w/Force 120 mileage?

I've owned boats before... I know their money pits. I don't have alot of money, but yeah, I'm sure I can afford to own a boat. :p ... For the record, I DO live on an island. ;)

I honestly havent decided how much I'm going to spend... I could go as high as 3500-4000, but I'd prefer to spend less. I'd like to find a deal on something and maybe do a little work on it to save some money.

I don't know.. Not sure what I'll end up getting. I'd like something with at least a cuddy cabin so I can do overnighters/weekend trips. I'd actually prefer something 24-28ft with a full cabin, but the mileage starts to get pretty bad.

Every once in a while I see a 20-21ft cuddy cabin with an I/O 4cyl. Sort of thinking that might be what I should go with... Any suggestions? :) (I should probably start a new thread for this)

Thanks! :)

I assume he would either fix it or not go boating :D There's no reason you can't enjoy boating even on a limited budget. As long as you understand what you're getting into when buying a cheap boat, which I think the OP does, and it's safe and seaworthy, then go for it. I've had a lot of fun on crappy, old boats over the years cause that's what my family could afford.

for 3500-4k around here you could find a "decent" old boat that will eventually give you problems if it doesn't already have issues. Especially in the 24-28' class. 20-21 is doable. I have no idea what that gets you down in your area though, so you would have to do your homework. My question is this; If you drop 4k on a boat, will you be able to pay the average typical maintenance costs for parts, labor, etc..? I still kind of go back to the original boat you mentioned. $1k gets you a working 19' boat with two working force 120's? I'm assuming when you say two motors, you mean one is hung on the boat and the other is in the garage as a backup? For $1g, I say buy the boat, run the hell out of the engine, replace it with the other engine once it dies, then run the hell out of it as well. Save your other $3g and keep adding to it until you're around $7-8g, which WILL get you a decent boat for your purposes. This way you at least get some enjoyment being out there while saving for a better boat.
