I am looking at a boat with a 200hp 1991 Evinrude. Owner says he kept it maintained. Any specifics I should look for or expect trouble with?

Welcome to the iboats forum!!:):)
Have a compression test and a leak down test performed by a marina of your choice. Check the engine paint for signs of burning to tell you if the unit was overheated. Check the boat for wear and tear to get an idea on how well the owner takes care of his/her things. There are several other thigs to look at as well that the experts will add to my starter list.

Buying a boat

1st you need to decide what you want to use it for, fishing, cruising, or water sports.

2nd how many people adults, children you want on board of the average outing.

3rd outboard, inboard-outboard, or inboard power plant.

4th Budget, what you want to pay, and what you are willing to pay, when you find
Exactly what you want.

You can hire a marine surveyor, to inspect the boat, or you can do it yourself.

You are mainly looking for soft spots in the deck, transom, cracks, all signs of a rotten, under frame.

The motor should be clean, no spots where the paint is discolored, or pealing from heat, having run hot. Compression should be atleast 100psi, and within 10% of each other,
Spark on all cylinders, good pee stream, check lower unit for water in oil.

The overall condition of the boat will tell you a lot, as to how it has been maintained.

A 30 year old boat motor combo, may be in better condition, than a 3 year old.

Re: 1991 200hp Evinrude

Thanks. The paint suggestion is a good one. The boat is a Whaler, which I already own 2 of. General condition of boat and motor seem to indicate regular if not pristine care. I have never owned an Evinrude larger than 3 hp so I was curious about the 200hp of that year. Age itself does not bother me as my 17' whaler is a 1964 and has a 1985 70hp Yamaha. From reading other posts, it sounds like many people give up on the oil injection systems with Evinrudes. That scares me as I ruined a 115 1985 Yamaha from similar recurrent oil pump problems.

That is a pretty good motor. Did not see a lot problems as it is open deck block. Just change impeller/plate once a year for safetys sake..

Any input on the oil injection dependability or other specifics on the motor. My debate with myself is can I expect to take this motor offshore 20-40 miles or am I going to end up repowering really soon because of confidence issues with the motor.

make sure it has the new OMS pump, or go to premix. premix conversion is easy.

It seems as though many of the posters believe in going back to pre-mix. I have not heard or read of this anywhere else. It would seem to me that it would use much more oil as you would be at 50:1 all the time instead of when necessary. I would also assume that the 'newer' injection motors would tend to foul at low rpm due to excess oil, to say nothing of the unburned oil in the exhaust/water. Keep in mind I owned a Merc 115 that required pre-mix so I am not doubting that it will function. Of course I wish I had pre-mixed with the injected 115 Yamaha, as that cost me rings/pistons and cylinder walls.

i gave you a choice, did not tell you to premix. just update the motor if it has not been.
