A coworkers 1991 40hp Evinrude quit on him out on the bay in Lake Erie. He told me it sounded like popcorn in a jar then wound down and quit. He tried to restart it and all it would do is click and the manual recoil would not pull out. The boat shop said it had seized up and was blaming the Ethanol in the gas as the cause. I looked at some of the photos and it looks like a lubrication failure to me. He told me that he put the Ethanol stabilizer in the gasoline at fillup and checked the auto lube tank that is was full. Anyway the shop wants to put on a new Tohatsu engine and junk the old Evinrude. My questions are
1. Can the old motor still be repaired for a reasonable amount of money?
2. Did the gasoline really cause this? (As I have a older engine myself)
3. Tohatsu's any good?
Thanks guys
