OK. First chat room subscription and First post. Please Be nice.

I have a 1991 70 hp force that was given to me (with the boat) and am having a bit of trouble. It sat for 8 years prior to me owning it. Did crucial maintenance on my own, (impeller, lower oil, spark plugs, thermostat, fuel pump, fuel lines) since my do it yourself work the force will start fine in high idle. (control pulled out and forward) once i return to a vertical position the motor dies. I can restart it no problem. I have found that if i do this quickly I can get it in gear and move in either direction but cannot go more than 10mph. Any help or ideas will be really helpful. I have not checked compression yet.

Also I was looking for carb parts online and am finding obsolete items and cannot find them anywhere. Any ideas where these obsolete parts may be found?

Thank you in advance for any responses.

Sounds like the idle might need to be set up. What is it now?
Idle is set on the bottom of the towershaft.
Clean the carb and make sure the low speed jet is clear.
Set the air screw at 1 and 1/2 turn out.

ok so sorry for the delayed response. A lot has happened since that last and initial post. I found a used carb and replaced the one that came with the motor and it started up and ran fine in the driveway (submerged in a tall bucket) so I adjusted the carb according to the manual's specifications and it continued to run. charged batteries all night and took it out on the water to make final adjustment and see if I could obtain full power. I could not get the motor to start at all tried for a while. Used starting fluid as a last resorts. It fired up for less than a second then died again. I am lost at this point and considering taking it to a shop
