Background. My uncles motor. Probably pretty low hour. He has to pull and pull and pull to start. Figured I'd try to help and it is finally warm enough to dig into this. I did make a post a few months ago. Well, the starter and the carb are off. Mack corner looks very warped. Dealer had part kit 433973. It has top 337833 in the kit and this is the same cover that is already on it. I do not see any other updated kit though maybe a couple different top covers (?). The instruction supplement states to tighten the screws to 8-10 INCH (not foot) pounds. I did not see this posted anywhere on Leroy's site so if it helps........

The kit comes with new needles but no gasket. The OEM rebuild kit has gasket. After doing some raking I will toss the carb body and bowl in the ultrasonic and see what happens. Will probably not post back for a few days. Now some supplemental questions....

1. Has anyone ever tried double gasketing the top cover and would that throw off the performance of the carb???
2. Has anyone tried a small dab of gasket sealer at that back corner without the screw?

Let me know any thoughts on the cover I am replacing.

Is the warped one in the picture the one you bought from dealer? I am assuming that is the old one.

How much did you pay for the new top? And you say it did not come with a gasket but it came with needles? Strange.

Thanks,
Chris

Dino,
Yup thats the old one and it is off. I put them both on a flat mirror and indeed that edge without the screw is warped up. There is a gasket with the kit - my bad. I tossed all my parts into the large envlope for that kit. Mine was $99.00 - ouch.

Now the issue is just how tight is 8-10 inch pounds. My trusty 1/4" inch pound torque wrench starts at 20 for lowest setting. I am inclined to very lightly tighten and check for leaks and running and err on the side of too loose to strart with. I love toys but a precision torque 5-50 inch pound screwdriver looks pretty expensive. If you might also advise of any tricks you ran through along the way............appreciated. In no real hurry for an extra couple days. To rain all week and get back into the 30's by weekend here. Thanks.

I agree, it's not worth buying a special torque driver just for this job. One thing you could try is to set your 1/4" torque wrench at 20 in-lbs and get a feel for how much "pull" you have to use to get it to 20 in-lbs. Then either try to mentally cut that in half, or pull on the wrench with the same amount of force, but at a point 1/2 way along the handle (assuming this is a ratchet wrench).
