Anybody know who actually made this engine. I think Merc made the lower unit but I'm not sure about the powerhead.

Also, does anybody know what the difference is between the 100 and the 115. I was looking at replacement power heads and they all list as 100-115. Assuming that means either or then would the difference be just in the carbs or if you buy a new powerhead do you end up with a 115?

Thanks to all in advance.

Both country of origin and manufacturer is coded into the serial number, could you post it?

Sure, I'll put it up tonight when I'm home. I've checked it which is how I know it's a Belgium 1991 ELPTO. The reference material I have doesn't tell me anything more than that.

Thanks Ladies, It's a B number ELPTO and I got the Belguim part just wasn't sure if they were making the powerheads or if Yamaha was. I've heard a couple of different stories. Any idea?

Re: 1991 Belgium made Mariner 100

I would be very interested in Laddies take on this, but my understanding of the events are as follows -

From conception, Mariners up to 60 hp were built in japan, by yamaha, right up until 1992 (complete build from prop shaft to cowling). 60 hp and up were a collaboration between merc and yamaha. I do not have a list of the exact parts that were common to merc and yamaha but the power head was definitely one of them. In 1972, Belguim began building mercs (owned and operated by mercury).

Right up until their divorce in 2006, yamaha made merc powerheads up to 225hp. although your motor was built in a merc factory, it is very likely that some of the parts were sourced from yamaha, namely the powerhead.

Dunaruna -
That pretty much confirms the rumor I heard. Not likely that I would hear the same exact info from someone that's never heard of iBoats.

When I was looking for a dealer to buy my new Yamaha from I mentioned that I had a 91 100hp Mariner. He asked me if I knew I already had a Yamaha and told me nearly word for word what you just said.

Ladies - The serial number is 09655784
Made by: Marine Power Europe = Brunswick SA

Since the merc/yamaha bust up, the retail consumer is slowly learning about all the badge engineering that has occurred. Honda made some merc powerheads, suzuki made 4 stroke johnrude motors - the list goes on. Same thing happens in the car industry.

Yep, Cadillac CTS - Reverse it to STC and you get a Stinkin Toyota Camry.
