1991 Evinrude 110 strange issue

I just purchased a used 19' bowrider powered by a 91 110 Evinrude outboard. While taking it out for the first time today, it seemed liked the engine's rpm would rise but boat would lose power. If I eased the throttle up it would run normally with about a 25mph max speed. It seemed like a slipping clutch. This is my first outboard and I am wondering if I am doing something wrong.

Thank you very much for helping me.

It sounds like you have a spun prop hub.

Likely spun prop hub:
SPUN HUB: Mark the inner and outer prop hubs with an indelible marker, run the engine in the water, under load and examine marks. If they've moved relative to each other, hub is spun. Take prop to a prop shop to have it rehubbed.

Thank you for such a fast response. This sounds like an easy fix.

Can you describe what a bad clutch dog would be like? I have been doing some research and fear that this was the issue.

thank you again.

A bad clutch dog would react like the engine jumping in and out of gear rapidly, it might feel like the engine is trying to jump off the back of the boat. You would not get the rpm increase and the boat slowing down.

Just to clarify, the spun prop hub is located on the prop itself and not on the lower drive.

Buying a new prop would cure this issue, correct?

Get the prop rehubbed at a prop shop. Way less than a new prop.

And, no the lower unit is not affected.
