It was suggested that I replace the thermostat also. is there a valid reason why?

Water pump housing bolts are as follows:

2 Piece drive shaft single port exhaust (water intake on the "bullet" portion of the gear case) - Long bolts 70 inch pounds, short bolts 40 inch pounds.

2 piece drive shaft dual port exhaust ( water intake on the flat portion above the bullet shaped part of the gear case) - Long bolts 50 inch pounds, short bolts 15 inch pounds.

Gear case housing to motor leg bolts:

If using 5/16 bolts - 160 inch pounds

If using 3/8 bolts - 270 inch pounds.

Replacing the thermostat is just a preventive measure.

Ohhyea! that is some good terminology. Thank you I should hit the water by early afternoon. The thermostat, as a percautionary measure. What should could I exspect or concentrate on if it is a potential issue. Again thank you very much for the info. I will save it and pass it on when I can.

English was never my strong point in school LOL! Anyways, there are a couple of low cost maintenance items that you should consider changing if you do not know how long they've been in service to insure a trouble-free boating season. Water pump impeller, thermostat, fuel pump diaphragm, lower unit gear oil, spark plugs. Also perform a compression test, and some folks would probably recommend a de-carb.

Thermostat issues would show up as either over heating (stuck closed or not opening all the way) or over cooling (stuck open, never closing). You can trash a motor pretty quickly by excessive over heating. You do want to run a thermostat because the motor was designed to run in a specific temperature range for maximum power.

Inch pounds???? Who has that kind of torque wrench? Just divide the inch pounds by 12 as 12 inches in a foot and you have ft pounds. At least that's what I found in a goggle search.

I have a in/lbs torque wrench. My boys ran off with my ft/lbs.

The reason the water pump housing was broken, the previous owner had the lower end rebuild in a shop, then incorrectly put it together to the leg, breaking the plastic housing at the water tube. Got the new gear lube, new impeller and gaskets whith wearplate.
The boat only seen water, after the pump breakage, when I tested it, and once when I wanted to trouble shoot. As far as performance of the power head it will be seen when I actually get some run time.
I have to go pieces at A time the xyz has me on a budget. next on the list isthe shop book for the engine.
