I'm going to be buying my first boat, but I've grown up around boats. I was looking at a 1991 Four Winns 205 Sundowner that is for sale for $9500. The boat is in excellent shape. It has an OMC 5.8L V8. The engine was just recently replaced by a mechanic friend of the owner, and it only has 8 hours on it. The owner said that he's been told that the engine was somewhere between 215 and 260hp. I'd like to do some waterskiing, and this should be enough horsepower, right?

The one thing that I'm worried about is that his friend may not have done a good job of replacing the engine. Is there anything that I should watch out for? Are there any known problems with this boat? I'm going to take it out on the water beforehand, and of course I'll check for rot with a water-meter(?).

Thanks for any help.

it has the OMC outdrive, which is becoming harder to find certain parts, and very expensive. i wouldn't go over $5000, on that boat, even if it were in showroom condition.
