Got a new to me center console with a 1991 Johnson 120. Ran the boat pretty hard after buying it and have had 0 issues up until yesterday. Idled while waiting for someone at the ramp for about 15 minutes and then went for about a 10 minute run at around 4500 rpm. When coming back down to idle I got an overheat alarm(constant beep) but all 4 lights in the gauge were illuminated as well and it went in to SLOW mode. I quickly checked the stream before shutting down to make sure it wasn’t burning Hot and could easily hold my hand under it. I turned the key off and turned it back on and got the same alarm. After shutting down and looking for any obstructions in the intake and finding nothing I let it sit for about 3-5 minutes. When it started back up no alarm, no slow mode. Ran perfect all the way back to the ramp. Do all 4 lights always come on in an overheat situation or is this indicative of a faulty gauge?
