1991 Johnson

I recently bought a boat that has a 1991 120 Johnson motor It starts right up it runs fine when I idols it dies in like 10 seconds when I try to put it in gear it will die as well then After a while I can get it going then if I put it in neutral it dies any idea of what might be causing it?
