Hello Everyone,

I am new to this so please be gentle with me. I purchased an 91 Larson
the boat that has a V8 motor. The top cover has Volvo Penta 500 on it.
Engine info on cover: 500L/PS 4100127512 868293
Shield PT: 1101597602 868130

My Repair manual shows it could be a Ford or GMC so I don't know which one.

I don;t know how long the boat was sitting for but I changed the oil, new battery, fuel and oil filters. The boat fired right up and running great. all or a sudden the boat does not want to stay idol. I have to keep it at 2500 RPM to have it running. I though I had water in my gas si I removed the tank and I just put a gas can to see if this will fix the problem or at least show me I am in the right track. The engine will start right away but die after a second. If I play with the throttle I can get the motor to run a bit longer.

I have looked at the plugs and they seem fine as well as the cap and rotor. I was going to replace those but before I do i just wanted to ask the questions.

Also is there an easy way for me to check to see if the fuel pump is working right.

If you need ne to put some pictures up I will.

Thanks,

Steve

It's a Chevy 305 engine, and it's a 500B, not an L

My Repair manual shows it could be a Ford or GMC so I don't know which one.

Obviously either a Clymer or Seloc. Good only for starting fire or use as knee pads.
Here is a link to the OEM serive manual for your engine.

Could give you a link to the manual for your outdrive, but no SN or model number is posted.

Your problem sounds more like a fuel problem, possibly the carb needs rebuilt. May have had water in the carb before allowed to set. See that a lot. then you have a lot of corrsion in the idle circuit. At which point the carb is 50/50 as to if it's uable or not after a rebuild.

Thanks Don,

Here are the numbers on the outdrive.
854021
DPA 195
3102106792X

Now I tried putting gas down the carb and the engine ran for a couple seconds then died out. I guess the easiest way to check if my fuel pump is working remove the line to the carb and see if fuel is coming out?

Also is there anything I can try with the carb, For what I was told the owner before me just purchased the carb in 2007. money is a little tight and if I can try and fix this that would be great before I have to go to a service center

Thanks,

Steve
