I Have a 1991 Marine 50hp 3cylinder outboard. There seem to be a few problems with the power head.

1. There is a very load rattling coming from the power head. I think it could be wore piston rings but i also think it might be related to the second problem.......

2. When the engine is running the power head becomes electrified and touching it results in receiving a shock. This makes working on it when its running impossible I think it might be the result of a electrical fault. Recently all the electrics were replaced due to a problem with the trim solenoids and some fried wires!!

Are the two related or is there another reason? If so what can be done to rectify them.

Check the cylinders for pressure, see if they are even or uneven. If uneven then you can have piston problems such as rods or broken rings
