Will A Bad Starter Make The Batteries Not Charge?

I Have A 1991 Maxum 2100sc W/a 4.3 Mercruiser Thunder Bolt Ignition. It Is My First I/o So Bear With Me. Last Summer I Noticed The Volt Meter In The Dash Was Riding Lower And Lower With Each Start. I Took The Alternator Out And Had It Bench Tested At Starter And Alternator Shop, It Tested Fine So The Mechanic Said Correct Volts, Amps. Etc, Etc. This Spring Went To Start The Boat And Starter Clicked Several Times Before Starting. So I Am In The Process Of Replaceing The Starter And Was Wondering If A Bad Starter Would Effect The Charging System?

Clean and tighten all your connections from alt to battery, including grounds.

Re: 1991 Mercruiser Starter

A bad starter will not effect the charging circuit. However most boat electrical systems have the positive leads from the alternator and other circuits coming to a common point on the boat, the common point is usually the positive terminal on the starter relay, from there a single wire goes to the positive terminal of the battery. So as coor's says clean all the connections on the starter motor as a bad connection there will mess up the charging circuit and the voltmeter reading. The starter is not effecting the charging, but the bad connection at the starter will mess up the charging circuit.. Also clean the battery terminals.
