Hi and Thanks in advance.

Just bought my first boat, I ran up and down the Mississippi the week I got it.
Found lots of little problems, looking for some information.

The distributor advance timing spring was rusted and broke, found that on eBay. Got lucky there.

Questions
1. Gas tank size in gallons.
2. Timing in degrees
3. Point gap and dwell

Where do you guys get parts like Plugs, rotor, cap, wires, carb repair kits?
I guess if I had part numbers I could get them at the local auto part store?

Where would I find the manual for the boat, engine, and I/O.
The engine is a Ford 3L I4
I have a Mercury I/O
I think it is a alpha-1. it has SE stamped on each side.

Thanks again.
Old Gator Navy Guy with love of the water.

I think you might want to post some pictures of your engine and drive.
1. A 3.0L I4 is a GM, not a Ford
2. OMC did use a Ford engine in 91, but it was a 2.3
3. Are you sure? What color is it?
4. SE stamped on the side ????? Have no idea what that is.

Now you see why we need some pictures.

Ayuh,... If it's a 3.0l, 'n If it's Merc, it's a Chevy motor, not Ford...
Merc never used a Ford 4 cylinder...

Mercury (Chevy) 3 liter, Mercury I/O of some vintage. Rinker 1991 181.

First, Mercury does outboards, Mercruiser does IO's

Being a 91, you could have either an Alpha I or an Alpha I Gen II.

Again, take some pictures.

Ayuh,... Is there a serial # on the plastic cover on the motor/ flame arrester,..??

If not,... Look along the side of the block by the starter for an aluminum tag.....
Usually lower aft starboard side...

It looks new enough to not have Points....

I would bet you have an SEI drive (aftermarket replacement) and it is the Alpha I style, (NOT Gen II) so your engine and drive are 1990, not 91. Common in boats.
Here are some links to the OEM service manuals, you may find them handy.

Engine http://www.4shared.com/document/B3wzU5Iz/Service_Manual_13.html

Drive http://www.4shared.com/document/zz_5pj9o/Service_Manual_06.html

I think you will find your answers in them, along with some answers to questions you haven't asked yet.

Thanks Don S. The drive says Mercruiser on it but it could still be an aftermarket?

I sucked oil out of the engine. Using flush muffs added antifreeze to Engine cooling system. That should do it for winter right? In the spring I intend to replace impeller, outdrive oil, and flush hydraulics.

First thank you to Don S and Bond-O
You have been most informative.

Does anyone know how big my gas tank is? I just got the boat, owner had no clue.

1991 Rinker 181? Mercruiser 3.0
Best guess, mpg? average speed, no skiers.

I assume 18 - 20 gallons and a distance to empty @ over 100 miles.
All I have is crazy guess. 7-8 mpg?

Jim

Remove that panel that covers the tank (if you have one) and look for a sticker on the tank that will tell you the capacity
