I would suggest you set the point with a feeler gauge first, but then check with a dwell meter. Those engines like to run a 62 or 63? dwell best. Lower or higher and you will probably see longer start times and poorer idle when cold and hot.
This is from the OEM manual. Here is a link to the manual if you want to download it.

Ignition setting for regular petrol (RON+MON)/2 = min 87 octane
Basic setting ........................................................................................ 6? BTDC (0?14.17 r/s = 0?850 rpm)
Stroboscope setting ............................................................................ 32?36? BTDC (70 r/s = 4200 rpm)
Contact gap ......................................................................................... 0.40 mm (0.01575")
Dwell angle .......................................................................................... 62?3?

Re: 1991 volvo penta 131 won't fire timing help?

So the #1 cylinder is in the back of the engine???? I figured it was in the front. The diagram appears to show #1 is in the back??? Coil is good had it checked out but the is no spark at the plug. I am figuring that I have the point gap set incorrect or I did not put back everything correctly. I do not own a dwell meter. Could there be any other reasons for no spark. Is there something I am missing???

No, it's just like any other engine known to man. The #1 cylinder is at the FRONT of the engine, no matter which way the engine is turned.
