So i had an issues with the motor overheating. Today I took apart the head covers and water jackets, and thermostat housings. There was a good amount of debris and salt deposits in the the water passages, so i cleaned them all up best I could. I had planned to do this the day before so I ordered all the parts needed to address the overheat issue. Upon removing the starboard head cover, I noticed water in the bottom cylinder. The gasket water pretty rough so I attributed it to that. I went around and cleaned the heads best I could.
Time to put everything back. New head gaskets, new water jacket gaskets. New thermostats with gaskets. New Thermo switches on both heads. I didn't change spark plugs but will do so tomorrow. I also have a new water pressure valve and spring with grommet and gasket but I have not gotten to that yet. Everything is back together. Tightened all the bolts to the specified torque on the head cover and water jacket cover. Cranked the motor and ran a bit rough. Overheat alarm went off in less than a minute of being running but I believe that is caused by the lack of water pressure from the muffs. The lower unit water pump is new as well. Checked the bottom spark plug again and it looks like is back to the same thing. Also noticed a bit more smoke than usual coming from the exhaust at the prop, as it was running.
I will take it to the water tomorrow for a test run in the water with good pump pressure. Besides taking the heads apart again, does anyone have any other suggestions as to what could be causing this? Could it be a bad coil causing the roughness? What about the water in the cylinder after all new gaskets?
