I sure hope someone can help me on this! I'll try to keep it quick so there isn't a bunch of reading.
So I have a 1992 Evinrude 25hp. It's my first time using the motor for the year. It started up fine, had a few small backfires/coughs (one big enough to stall the motor) when it first started but once it warmed up that went away. As I started out I noticed a bit of bluish smoke from the exhaust. Running a little rich or not a complete burn I figured.
About 10 minutes away from the dock the motor suddenly bogged down and died just like I let off the throttle which I hadn't. I tried restarting 5 or 6 times and then BOOM, big backfire, engine cover lifted off, flames, lots of excitement. The flames were concentrated around the carb. Once the fire was dealt with (no visible damage so I think I lucked out) I tried pulling the motor over slowly with the ignition disconnected and noticed fuel collecting in the throat of the carb and eventually spilling over.(about 2 full pulls to get it to the point of overflowing) I wasn't sure where it was coming from though. If I pulled on the primer plunger when I pushed it in, fuel shot out of the 'needle'?? (brass rod at the very opening of the carb throat in front of the butterfly) and added to the fuel puddle in the throat. With those results I decided against starting the motor again and started paddling.
Needless to say it was a long paddle/wade home so now I'm sitting here wet, tired and just a little annoyed with my motor (okay maybe me too for not investigating things when the motor wasn't running quite right). Am I looking at a carb rebuild or does someone have a different idea??
Thanks guys!
Sean
