Hello. According to the local engine repair shop back in fall, I was told that my stator needs to be replaced, and I would like to try doing it myself. I dont recall if I need to purchase a black or red one (one replaces the other I was told). Has anyone done this replacement and is it very simple, and which color stator do I need to order? Also, any special tools that you might suggest?

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Joe

What is your engine s/n and do you have the service manual which will show you how to test the stator and change it if necessary?

Re: 1992 40HP Outboard Stator replacement help

The problem is that the engine runs bogged down, usually only about 50-60% of full throttle even when open all the way. Then while under way it will sputter and kick wide open and run fine. Then next time I start under way again, same story. Local marina tested the stator and said the ohms reading was off. They also said there was a technical bulletin on my motor that required a replacement of a different color.

There is a reason I asked for the engine s/n but that is up to you when you are ready.

Re: 1992 40HP Outboard Stator replacement help

That s/n comes up as:

MERCURY - ( 40 H.P. (1992 ))
Serial No: 0D129002 Model No: 1040412MD

Parts and Service Bulletin list for s/n 0D129002:

Search Results - Crowley Marine

Don't see any bulletins applicable to your engine re stator.

The service manual you require is P/N: 90-814676R1. If you do not have this manual, see my message to you in Notifications at the top of this page.

The stator, seen as item 4 under FLYWHEEL, STATOR AND STARTER MOTOR in the parts list is selected by s/n and whether you have electric or manual start. If yours is electric start, the one you need is 832075A20 STATOR KIT-4 CYL or 832074A6 STATOR KIT if manual start.

I would test the stator yourself before replacing it, I wouldn't just take your shop's word for it. You will also need a mercury flywheel puller to get it off. DO NOT try to use a regular flywheel puller unless you want to buy a new flywheel too. The flywheel pullers can be found in a lot of different places and are worth every penny. But do a complete ignition test from the manual first, before you go throwing parts at it because someone said it was bad. my 2 cents

Hello. I am finally getting to replacing the stator and I need to order the Mercury Flywheel puller. Is there only one that is standard for all motors or is there a specific part number of the puller for my older model engine?

Hi. So I am at the point where I am trying to remove the flywheel to get to the stator. I have removed the center bolt and attached the flywheel puller but cannot see, to remove the flywheel. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestion on how to remove it. I believe as I tighten the center screw on the puller, that it should pop the flywheel loose, but no luck. Am I supposed to be tapping it with a hammer, and if so where?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
