1992 70 hp johnson tachometer

My tachometer is not reading correct. I may only be running 2000 rpm and it will be showing 7000+.I had a 90 hp evinrude on my boat previously and I did switch dial on back from 8p to 6p.any ideas on what might be the problem?

Are you sure you have it exactly on 6P? Close don't count. And why did you have the 90 set to 8P? It should have been 6P.

No I'm not sure its dead on the 6p mark but I will definitely b checking to see if it is.and I could be wrong about the 8p on the 90 but I know I had to move it to 6 so it wasn't on 6.

Move it through all it's settings once, set it back to 6 and see what happens.

Ok got it working right.i think my reg/rectifier is going bad,it is still charging my batt but just enough to keep it from going dead.i put the grey/tach wire on the bottom yellow from stator and it works like that but will not work when hoojed to reg/rectifier.
