Have a 1992 75hp Merc OB and need to install a water pump kit. It sounds simple enough but would appreciate any tips and tricks that may make the job smoother. Ideas?

Thanks

i like to use vaseline when installing the impeller. it makes it easier and it flushes out with no problems

Thanks.

Anyone know if putting it in forward, neutral or reverse before dropping the lower unit is preferred?

i usually leave it in forward and install the water tube into bottom of power head first, then ease up the lower unit and make sure bottom of water tube goes into water pump housing. also make sure shift rod in lower unit slides into shaft in midsection

Buy the appropriate service manual for your motor. It will save you untold time and trouble in the future. Bought mine off Ebay for less than $20.

DON'T force anything on reinstall. If it is lined up right, it will slide right in.

I agree with jacket.

Mercury will sell you your engines service manual for $100, but I picked up mine for about $20 or $30 on ebay.

The service manual (and I think seloc as well) tells you to have the engine in neutral.

Getting a manual is a no brainer but for the minimal wrenching I do $100 simply isn't worth it. Looking on Ebay is an excellent idea though.

Thanks for the tips.

Labor rate in my area is $95/hr. They wanted $250 to do my impeller. Didn't take me long to figure out it was a worthwhile investment, even if I HAD to pay $100 for it, which, as I said, you won't, if you are at all patient.

Additionally, you can buy them at Amazon in the $40-$60 range.

But, whatever floats your boat (pun most definitely intended.):)
