Last week I posted about a 1985 Evinrude 90, well as it turns out the guy I bought it from didn't know what he was talking about and the motor is actually a 1992. The tag on the motor bracket had been painted over, after some delicate cleaning I was able to read the numbers and found it to be a 92. The guy cut the horn and some of the wires that go to the control box, so I have no way of knowing if the motor is overheating. Any idea how to fix it? The VRO has also been plugged so I need to keep the horn from going off for the oil, but need to know if the engine is running to hot. Also have a tach I'd like to hook up, any info you can provide would be great! Thanks.

Re: 1992 90 HP Questions

If you let it warm up for a few minutes and can still put your hand on the heads without burning yourself it's not overheating. Also check the temperature of the water coming out of the telltale.

I'm unclear on whether this is on a boat or not, and hooked up to a control box or not. I assume since the horn line is cut that you don't know if there's a VRO alarm going off?

It is on a boat and hooked up to a control box. The VRO line is cut and the oil line is plugged, so the gas is mixed before it hits the engine. So I have no idea if the horn is going off or if it even works.

you need to reconnect your horn even if you need to run a new wire..but if he cut the wire..just reconnect it with a butt splice. you NEED an overheat alarm working. to stop vro alarm, just unplug the vro, the wires coming out of the vro about 6 " is a plug. unplug it to stop vro alarm.

if you have side mount controls, under your key switch is a harness connector that has a rubber cap on it. that is your tach harness connector.

I don't have a side mount, but it is OMC and it does have a harness coming off it, 3 wires: purple, gray, and black. I am assuming those are tach wires since it's 3 wires for a tachometer. But the motor also has the systems check, but I would assume there would be more than 3 wires? I have the Seloc book, but there is no mention of the wires for the systems check or tach.

Aren't you the very lucky person. An owner of an engine 7 years newer than you thought! It is possible the prior owner just cut the wiring to the oil tank and the VRO pump. The wiring to the two overheat switches may still be intact and functioning. You can do a simple test yourself. There is a wire which goes to each of the (two) overheat sensors, one in each head. There is a simple knife connector on the harness by each sensor. Pull the rubber sleeve back and short that connector to engine ground while you have the key switch on. The horn should sound. That's normal. Then test the other sensor. The 3-wire pigtail is probably the one for a tach. The grey wire is the signal wire, the pink is hot and black is ground. Very likely that the wiring diagrams at the top of this very page will give you all the correct factory wiring. Toss that Seloc manual in the garbage and get yourself an original factory service manual. Check out outboardbooks.com.

Purple, grey and black are the tach wires. grey is the sender. A System Check Gauge will have an about an 8 pin dual inline connector. If you see it on the harness, you chould be able to connnect the gauge. A '92 motor may have the three sensors only (Overheat, Low Oil, No oil). You obviously only need the one sensor, so a std tach is probably a little cheaper to install.

Yea I just need the tach and I am hoping to get the temp sensors hooked back up to the horn so I won't need to worry about a temp gauge or warning light.

for sure hook that temp sensor alarm back up. and test it once per year, by grounding the temp sensor wire that goes to your head under the cowl. its a tan wire i think.
