You are on the edge with a 20' boat and a V-6. A V-8 would be much better.

The outdrive is the part of the motor that comes out of the transom (back of the boat). Piranha is a mfg of props. A mooring cover is usually a snap-on cover that will cover the interior of the boat.

Just my .02.. I would be wary. This is on the low end of the price spectrum for what I would expect to see this boat for sale. If it is in rough shape then that is a different story. And again I would be wary in that you do not seem to know much about the components of a boat, much less to evaluate the condition of them. No disregard meant, just pointing this out.

You could very well end up with a few thousand in problems if not evaluated properly. Find a friend who is knowledgable or rent one (surveyor).

How fast do you want to go? The V8 will take a 2050 to near 50 mph with the right prop. I imagine the V6 would do ok for cruising (in the high 30's) unless you need the V8 speed or want to ski or wakeboard on the back (tubing's not a problem). It's not a great ski boat even with a V8 --too big a boat = too big a wake.

A pirahna prop is an aftermarket prop made of composite materials. The blades break off if you hit something without damaging the hub. Ask to see the original prop for the boat which was aluminum. It's condition may tell you something about the last owner's treatment of the boat. I agree with Rogerwa that $5,000 is a pretty low price if the boat is well maintained, but the V6 is not as in demand -- even so, I'd be very careful, Bayliners from that era are not reknowned for their quality or durability.

Hi,
I have the same boat but with a 125hp force o/b,I think the V6 will be about 135hp so should be slightly faster, mine pulls ok doing about 35-40mph, I recently went out with 4 adults and 3 kids and it was fine, but I couldn't keep up with my mate in his bayliner cobra v8! who's engine blew first time out so test run it before you buy or make sure it has a warranty and try to kill it in the warranty period (like I did and i got problems after the warranty!!).
I think the boat is great and will tackle the rough stuff much better than a smaller boat and has room for the kids to walk around on.
I know there is an outdrive that is prone to trouble,so ask here if its yours!!
I paid £3995 in the uk for the 1989 package which is about $5000 but it does have a few scratches on it and none of the electrics worked (which were just mucky contacts in the switches etc)
Take it for a run first and check all the things work also check for oil leaks etc after the run.
good luck

I'm by no means a pro here, but the year, engine and price range is definately 'on the edge' as others have posted.

V6 is a good motor, but I've always kept in mind that if you have a full load, you'll probably be putting that engine to it's max, or near max, range all the time.

I don't know about the rest of the forum, but I like to have power to spare!

A V6 in a 20 ft. is questionable in my opinion.
My 21.5 Bayliner came with a 305, which does the job very nicely. It tops about 52-55 with the family aboard and a smooth lake.

And another thing to consider... Any floor rot?
It's already 10 years old. I bet there's some damage down there.

There was a poster that suggested to me to pull an engine lag bolt to see if there is any rot.
I don't know any other ways to check other than to tear the floor up. Maybe you can get a good look underneath the panels if you can get them off.

H.
