So I got my carbs all cleaned up and and the boat is running great. It is just at start up that the engine seems to really smoke and pop for about 10 seconds before it cleans itself out and is running well.

I am wondering how the enrichener works. Does it squirt some fuel into the carbs every time you start up? Or is it just when you push the key in when you are starting? I have heard they can stick, how would you go about checking this? It seems that once the motor has been run for a while and is hot the enrichener should not be needed for starting.

The motor seems to start well so how about just disconnecting the power to the enrichener and calling it done?

Disconnecting it would be a bad idea. You can easily check the enrichner solenoid by unhooking the output hose and putting it into a container. Pump up the primer bulb and push the key. Gas should flow out. No gas should flow when the key is NOT pushed. If you really want to be extra sure you could use a mityvac and apply a small vacuum to the output to test for leakage.

Edit to add, maybe your fuel pump is leaking into the cylinder?

Enrichener works by allowing fuel from the top carb drain into the two lower carb throats. The enrichener has a manual push button on it for testing. Once engine is warm, use of the enrichener is not usually necessary. I need to use mine to get the motor started when it stalls when running at high tilt. Enrichener should only be activated when choke button (or push to choke) is in use.

Hmm seems like that is not my problem then as the enrichener is not stuck open or anything. It just seems to load up while starting and then clear up with a little throttle. Carbs are in good shape, so maybe the fuel pump is dumping raw fuel, or that is just the way it is and I have to have a smokey start and then enjoy the boat.

Not really a big deal as the boat is running good it is just a little embarrassing smoking out the marina.
