Have poured over many many rebuilds here on the forum and a few on youtube. Including Friscoboater's, BaylinerChuck, and a few others.
I have a 1992 Crownline 196BR I picked up in June. 5.0LX V8 with a Alpah one gen 2 outdrive. Being new to boats, I didn't really know what all the check when I bought it. The interior was IMMACULATE (is original and still looks new), all gages except speedometer were working...intermittent issue with the trim gage. The motor ran really well, outdrive was in good condition. Exterior was solid except for a dime size ding on a corner which i repaired, and a scuff on bottom which needed repaired.
Took it out twice and both times no issues running. Only ran it up to 30mph both times, and cruised at those speeds.
I did however notice about 8 oz of water in bilge during first trip. During 2nd trip, I inspected the bilge upon launching...nothing present water wise. Reversed from dock, and checked again....small leak around the bottom of transom plate which only leaks in reverse. Static in water or under forward power, no leak present at all.
Got to feeling on the transom in lower left corner near the leak area....it has some give. Not punch through give...but I can feel it flex when I push it.
I also inspected the deck a bit better and have some rot in the far right corner, and near the inspection/access port to the fuel tank (screws weren't sealed there). So I stuck my head in and can see rot on top of the stringer closest to the port so I know i am getting water into the screw holes there and it is leeching for sure to that stringer.
BUT...I know there has to be other rot down low, as I have banged on the motor mounts....and one sounds hollow, while the other has a few spots of rot going on inside.

So I know I am going to have some work to do here. I am suspecting a full rebuild. Scared? More like apprehensive...but what can I do now? I am up for a challenge and pretty handy.

So my question will be...on a 19 1/2' boat....beam width of 102 inches....about what kind of cost in materials am I possibly looking at. I don't need specific....just ballpark. Mainly on amount of resin/fiberglass needed.
And how many man hours likely are needed for the project? I would like to start at end of our season here coming up at end of September if I decide to tackle it, with a goal to splash it in late May 2021.

Appreciate any advice, good will, encouragement...throw the whole book at me!

I'm sure other members can get you a close estimate but it depends on what materials you use and if you have access to the tools you will need (saws, engine hoists etc.) Do you have any pictures?

Will try to post pictures later. I don't have any of the rock though at the moment.

As far as tools, I have access to just about any tool I would need but I will need use of an engine hoist which I may be able to source from a friend or rent. I will also need to snag a shop vac. Aware of respirator and tyvek type suits. So I know the costs there.

As far as what I will use on this, I am looking at polyester resin instead of a poxy resin. I probably would be looking to do much like the other restorations here and sill everything off to make it as waterproof as possible and would use the 2lb expanding foam.
Just unsure on amount of resin and amount of 1708, csm, caboodle that may be needed...which of course affects total costs.

For the engine hoist, I know I will probably get scolded for this but instead of renting one I bought the 2 Ton hoist from harbor freight. I took a Mercruiser 140 out of my 18ft Sea Ray and it had enough lift to get over the side with only jacking the trailer tongue up as high as i could. It only cost $179 with the coupon, the way I looked at it was for the cost of renting twice you are paying a decent amount plus the hassle of getting it home. So to me it made sense and now I can pull my motor when ever i need to plus I do auto work on the side so I will definitely be using this alot

Ball park estimate . . . $3K in materials, tools, etc. Looks like the seats were re-upholstered :noidea:

Continue to check for the extent of wet/rotted areas . . . drill so test holes and see what you get for shavings, etc. Then work up a re-build plan. I would assume the engine needs to come out at some point. Get the seats out of there and in a safe place to avoid damage.

A 19' boat with a 5.0 engine would be worth having :thumb:

Keep the pictures coming . . .

Not to high on the trailer. Weight wise I could of used the 1 ton hoist but because of the additional height I had to get the 2 ton. I had to go from the side because the rear of the trailer was to low to get the hoist underneath. If you need additional clearance you can always remove the trailer tires and set the hubs on wood. What I did was measured the height of the transom from the ground and then the max height of the hoist which is on their webpage and subtracted the height of the motor to make sure it would clear before I purchased it

I just looked it up the 2 tons max height is 89" but you have to subtract for the chains or load leveler that you use. Mine cleared with a load leveler but our boats probably are not sitting at the same height

I will have to do some measuring when I get the boat home (it is in covered storage about 5 miles away). I don't think I am going to be able to clear with 89", but will get it all figured out. I can also pull the wheels and lower the trailer to the ground and get to it that way. That will give me quite a bit of additional clearance.

Plan at moment is to limp it along for the next 6 weeks (probably will use it only 3 or 4 times in that span) and keep an eye on the bilge. I don't think at this point I will make it any worse in that short of a period. And like I said, the 2 times we have taken it out, I have had maybe 1 cup of water total in the bilge after we were done (4 to 5 hours).
