Hello,
First post here. Done a bit of searching and I need a little help.

Boat is a 17' Polar saltwater series with a 115hp Evinrude. Took it out and it ran fine most of the day. Shut it off bc it looked to be running a little hot. We couldn't get it to stay running again. Changed out the plugs and checked the compression. 110 in the left 2 cylinders, 75 and 90 in the right 2. With the muffs on it runs fine with a little throttle but will not idle.

Brought it to the shop and they are telling me 3 coils are out, head gasket needs to be replaced and after that they say it will probably still need a power head.

What do you guys think?

Quick update.

We pulled the heads and the head gaskets are shot. Cylinder walls look good to me but I'm not an expert. Ordered new gaskets, coils, water pump, and fuel filter. Should I look for anything special while I have it apart?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

While at the shop, perhaps impeller and thermostats??

Forgot to say, also ordered an impeller. I will check out the thermostats. Can't hurt.

The shop no longer has the boat. $4000 wasn't an option.

Before you put much $ into that powerhead, make sure the compression is salvageable. Put your new headgaskets on and recheck the compression. You want both starboard cylinders to be within 10% of the port cylinders at 110 lbs. Once you know the compression is good, then spend the money for the coils, thermostats and impeller.

Great news!

Changed the head gaskets, head cover gaskets, all 4 coils, and temp sensors. Now we have 105-110psi on all cylinders and she's running like a champ when hooked up to the hose.

Now I need help with something else. Water is moving ok while hooked up but we were told the water pump was bad so we are replacing it.
Right off we can't get the lower unit off. Have a "service" manual and its no help at all. I know to remove the 4 bolts but after that I'm clueless. Any help would be great.

Thanks,
Sikes

6 bolts must come off for lower unit removal. Last two are the trim tab and one underneath it. Then the shift rod or actually in reverse...shift rod needs to be disconnected first. A bit of a hassle but a pin comes out of the shift arm below lower carb then the arm slides out and the shift rod should wiggle loose (need a good long pair of needle nose pliers.
Once lu removed water pump housing comes apart and old impeller should come off with some clockwise taps with hammer and screwdriver may need some prying but make sure you replace steel base plate that should come w/ kit as you will prob. damage it removing impeller.
good luck

Thanks Todd,

Everything went together great. Brought her out for the first time today and had no problems.
