Hi to all,
I am having some problems with my engine, runs great, starts with no problems and for the first 5 minutes run great, then you you continue to go at 4000 rpm ore more begin to "cough abruptly" and it stop suddendly. you go back in neutral position and it starts again with no problem...
I have already changed all the fuel filters but I think it's an electrical problem.
Please help me
thank you again and best regards to all
Fenomeno

Hello, Fenomeno.

If the engine coughs it is too lean. You have taken a wise approach in replacing the filters, but I think you still have a fuel flow problem.

Plugged venting on your fuel tank?
Weak fuel pump?
Restriction at the fuel pickup in the tank or the anti-siphon valve?
Pinched fuel line?

Let us know what you find. and good luck. :)

Thank you very much,
I have had problems of water in the fuel and engine did not go over 4000 rpm then I have changed filters purged carbs and looked to be ok.
I said electrical problems because when it goes off is suddendly like when you activate the kill switch. this problem could be given also by fuel lean?
thanks again

Do you have a service manual or meters to check the ignition system?

I wouldn't over look the power pack either. Very similiar symptoms. As 'they' say...it's either gas or electrical. :p Here in the U.S. a power pack cost about $225.00, give or take, and about one hour installation time. This is not difficult repair. I chased gas problems for a half year...turned out to be a power pack. Get one, put it on...if that's not the problem, you've got a spare. You'll need it sometime. ;) Keep us posted!

I have had problems with the powerpack with my previous engine (evinrude 115) and it was different. This time engine starts always perfectly, and runs great also for long periods till 4000 rpm, if you go faster it reach with no problems 5700 rpm but after 2 minutes (more or less)it begin to cought till it stops.
what do you think about a bad contact on the key switch or the security switch for the starting?
thanks again
Fenomeno

Fenomeno..... That engine has a thick foam seal between the carburetor face plate and the front of the carburetor throats. It is in essence a air restrictor. Should that foam become damaged, or should someone have removed it, the engine will act exactly as you've described.

With it missing, more air is drawn into the carburetors than needed, causing the fuel mixture to lean out at the higher rpms..... and the engine will cough a few times, then stop suddenly.

Could it be the SLOW system malfunctioning?

If the motor overheats the SLOW system will limit the RPMs until it cools down and resets itself. I have heard of the system malfunctioning. I think to test it you just disconnect the heat sensors on the heads. Mine activated one time and when I tried to throttle up it sounded horrible but it idled and ran at lower RPMs like nothing was wrong.

Fenomeno.... The foam I speak of is a black heavy duty, solid type of foam.... not the normal fluffy kind. It would be attached to the inside portion of the face plate. The part number is 331098. Contact me via e-mail and I'll send you a diagram of it. ReevesJ32@aol.com
