can someone advice me on what to do i have a robalo 18cc with twin evinrude 70hp 1992 and the engines start good and run perfect but when i'm in the water and put them in neutral both die or one or the other first start back up ok and continue run good until on idle again and i'm idle for not more then a minute they start dying on me i have turn back up and maintain them on higher rpms. the rpm it is right now is about 1300s i was told to raised them between 1500 and 1800 but i don't know where to do this man and they work perfect it's just the idle....thanks for all your help

you idle rpms, need to be around 650-700 in gear. sounds like you either have a carboration problem, compression problem. check compression on both motors and report back.

shifting above 900 will destroy the lower unit, rather quickly.

Have they just started doing this? Do they only do it under load on the water or in the driveway as well on muffs?

it was doing this in the water and on muffs too, i took out all six carbs and redo the cleaning on them installed them back and went to the racor filter S3227 and found that the filter was broken on the bottom so i installed it new it's working fine on muffs now i want to tested in the water but for sure that was the problem because i had bought the boat when i came home on leave from iraq on march and then went back and when i finally got home i didn't replaced it so that was it for sure now it's perfect i'll let you know when i get it in the water,,,,thanks for all the help....

did you leave the old gas in it while you were away? Was it at least stabilized?

Re: 1992 evinrude 70hp dies at idle

I went to the water yesterday and both engines started out perfect but only one maintain the right side one,, the left side one came out with something that i can't figured out yet both were running ok then all of the sudden lefty went down on rpms i slow down but it didn't shut off so i kept going around 4,000 rpms it kept running so i kept going then after like an hour trolling at around at 6knots it die on me so i crank it back up but it would crank but not start and if it would start it would die fast so after a while it got going but the rpms where erratic and it wouldn't run at the rpm's of the other one like i would be running 4000rpms and lefty be running 3300,3400,3000,3500,3200,you know it would be erratic and not much power while the other be cool on it's rpms, and it would shutoff in a while and to started back up ufff but it would start back up after a while playing with it i noticed that the spark was low on intensity,,but now i can't figure out if it's the fuel or spark problem man i'll tell you not a good day,,at least i could get back and out of the water safe and sound,,when i got home i placed the muffs and it started like if nothing ever happen but rpms where low too low.......

yes i left the old gas in it and no it wasn't stabillized......compression was 120 and 125 all around on both engines,, i figured that it must be the old fuel what do you think might be....thanks
