Hello All,

I recently rebuilt my power head and it runs great. One think I've noticed after I rebuilt it was that after I took it out of the water, I noticed that there was a considerable amount of water draining from a hole in the lower unit by the water pump.

I took off the lower unit and put a garden hose on the water tube, water came out of the tell-tale as I expected but when I took the water hose away, not only did water come out of the water tube, but it also came out from where the water tube went up into the leg. I think that the cavity around the water tube is filling up with water.

It might have been doing this before & I just watched it closer after I was testing out my engine.

Does any one have any thoughts on this?

Re: 1992 Force 70 HP Cooling Question

The water draining from the tube was just flowing back out.
The water coming from around the tube in the exhaust leg, is the normal exit route for the water, after it flows thru the powerhead.

When I have a new impeller, my 70 hp pumps so much water at lower rpms, that it fills up the exhaust leg and it comes out the top. As rpm's increase, and more exhaust is produced, it seems to force the water out.

I would think you are ok.

Just curious, Why did you have to rebuild?

Re: 1992 Force 70 HP Cooling Question

Roscoe, thanks for the reply, that makes me feel better!

Actually it was my stupidity...I have a shelf in my garage where I keep my gas & 2 Cycle oil. I must have got busy one time when I was changing the oil on my car and put a 10W30 oil bottle on that shelf...It looked almost identical to the 2 Cycle oil, so you can image the horror :( when I went to grab a bottle to mix with a new tank of gas that I bought and found a motor oil bottle half full (it also explained why my motor had a challenge idleling the last time I had it out.)

I live in FL and take my boat on the saltwater of the gulf. Of course that one time I used the 10W30 I was too busy to flush out the engine and had plans on taking it out a few days later. You can also imagine my horror  the next time I tried to take it out, I turned the engine over and just heard the click of the start engaging, but the engine wouldn't turn. I knew the battery was charged. I'm sure you can figure out what happened!

$600 later and countless hours in the garage, I think I've learned my leason about keeping my oil separated and flushing out the engine every SINGLE time.

Other than my above stupidity, I've had the motor since it was new in 92, mostly in fresh water and with the minimal maintenance of new plugs, changing the lower unit oil, cleaning the carb etc... the motor always ran like a champ!
