I have a 1992 Baja islander with a 4.3 OMC Cobra in it. The starter has gone bad and I am looking for a replacement. The currant starter is stamped ASE J1171 and looks to have a stamp on the end of it that says 1998. My question is will any ase J1171 starter with the same bolt pattern work on this, I am having a hard time finding a starter that says it is for a 1992 OMC. all the J1171 starters state they are for 1998 and newer motors.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Ayuh,...... Welcome Aboard,..... That's not a part number, but a marine rating,.....

Chevy starters only come in 2 flavors,.....
The staggered bolt pattern for the 14" flywheel,....
'n the straight across bolt pattern for the 12" flywheel,......

You need a new copy of which ever you take off,.....

J1171 just means marine rated. You will fine that label on all kinds of parts in the engine bay.
