1992 Johnson 120 intermittent fuel alarm

The fuel restriction alarm comes on intermittently on my 1992 johnson 120. If I turn off the motor, let it sit for a few minutes, and turn it back on, it will correct itself. Any ideas? I changed the water seperator with a new one, but no change. Whats next? Thanks

You talking about oil level alarm aren't you, rather than oil flow alarm?

Could be several things...sending unit going bad, float sticking, warning module electronics confused.....

Guess I got confused on this. Most engines have an overtemp alarm (constant warning) and oil level (intermittent warning). Am personally not aware of a dedicated fuel flow alarm.

The engine is your fuel flow alarm. If fuel quits flowing the engine stops!

My engine has a warning system which alerts for low oil, no oil, overheat, fuel restriction, and a few others which I can't remember off the top of my head. It is the same system for all of these, the whistle is at different lengths to differentiate.

The 1992 V4 looper didn't come from the factory with the fuel restriction sensor like the V6's. It could be added, just make sure that's what was done so you aren't chasing ghosts. If it was added there will be a vacuume switch after the fuel connector on the pan and before the pump.

well what I am getting is a steady whistle while the engine is running, when this happens, I accelerate in neutral and the engine runs really rough and sputters, on the helm, there is a plaque that came with the boat that tells what all the alarms mean, it says steady whistle and engine wont run above idle means fuel restriction, now this particular boat came with either a 90hp or a 120hp johnson from the factory. So I would assume that four winns would not display alarms that did not exist, however, I could be wrong I guess..

If it's going into S.L.O.W. (Speed Limit Overheat warning) with the steady horn, that means it's overheating. If it has the fuel restriction warning, and it sounds, it will not go into SLOW. SLOW limits the rpm to about 2800 or so.

Look at your incoming fuel line. If it a continous line from the connector to the pump (should have a small in-line filter) it has no fuel restriction warning. If there is a fitting in the line and has a small hose going to a vacuume switch, it has the fuel restriction warning.

The 125 commercial motors with 2 old style fuel only pumps have the system but not the 120-140. Unless someone added it. Not a bad idea.

I will check that out...so what do I do if it turns out it is overheating, the water is coming out of the engine, so the pump is working.

it comes out in a strong stream I will take a closer look though

How much pressure on the gauge? At idle and wot.

1. Use a temperature probe and verify that the engine is not overheating.
2. Disconnect the tan temperature wire from the pack and retest. If the engine now performs properly, replace the temperature switch.
3. Make sure the tan temperature switch wire is not located next to a spark plug wire.
