Hello All,
Motor:1992 johnson 200hp VRO.

I brought out the boat from winter storage today, cleaned plugs, tightened hose clamps, did a general review. Hooked up the water and she cranked right up per usual. I let her run for 10 minutes or so, watching and listening for any anamolies. All was good. Then upon raising the motor to put back in the barn I noticed oil/gas mix under the motor running toward front. Checking this out, I found a drip coming from under the carberator cover. I took out one of the two bottom screws on the front of the cover (not the side screws) and oil/gas came pouring out. I let it drain out the wire harness notch. A total of 1.5-2 pints in my estimation. I took off the carb cover. All gaskets were ok, but it seemed to me the liquid was coming from the bottom carb judging by the moisture around the bottom of that particular section of gasket.

Question: Is this gasket something I go purchase, remove the old and install the new? Or are there 'gotchas' to this situation I need to be aware of?

I do have another gasket question, not related to this item, that I will post seperately.

Thanks a bunch,

Winfield

When you say carb cover, are you refering to the air box cover. It sounds like you may have sticking needle in one of the carbs.

Hi OB,
The 'cover' I'm talking about is approx 8" wide by 15" tall, has 'V6' stamped on the front. There are approx 6 bolts on either side, and 2 in the bottom, the bottom 2 are about 3in long vs. the side bolts are 3/4in or so. This is the first thing you see when looking aft at the motor w/o the cover on it.

"sticking needle" ? Is that something we can suss out over a forum like this or am I better going to mech? I am reasonably mechanically inclined and enjoy 'tinkering', but haven't rebuilt a motor for 12 years or so and that was a tractor motor where everthing was pretty acccessible.

Thanks for the quick reply,

Winfield

Yes it is the air box cover that you are describing. Installing carb kits is something that you could probably tackle but would suggest that you invest in a seloc or clymer after market manual to walk you thru it. These are great sources of information.

By the way you can pick up carb kits at your local dealer.

2 questions I just thought of......
If, as OBTech suggests, the gas/oil mix I found has come from 'sticking needle' in carb, could that have been one time affair after sitting for winter? The motor did run normally once started.
Also, can I run the motor without the air cover on to determine which carb may be the offending one? If I do, what should I expect. I am guessing, nothing, if everything is OK, blowing gas/oil if not.

Thanks again,

Winfield

Wow, this forum moves fast. I wanted to repost this to see if anyone could answer. Please refer to previous post for current situation. Thanks.

Lastly, local mech says $350 to rebuild carbs. Is this reasonable?

Thanks again,
