I am changing the water pump impeller on my outboard and can't see how to disconnect the shift linkage. The shift rod is attached to the lever with a pin which is not very accessible. Does anyone know the trick to removing the pin? Thanks.

Yes, you have one of those one piece lower cowls. Perhaps a jury rig tool is available. Hopefully someone here can help.

Pretty simple actually.---Find the hitch pin on the shift lever at the motor,---Remove that pin.----Now push the shift lever to port and rotate forward.---Shift rod should now be released.

Thanks! I'll give that a try. So I guess the pin at the top of the shift rod does not need to come out?

My earlier post is very clear I believe.--When you push that lever to the port side the shift rod disconnects.--The only tool required is a long needle nose plier to remove the hitch pin.

That worked like a charm! Thanks so much. That would have taken some time to figure out.

I have everything back together, but I am having trouble hooking up the shift linkage. I have the pin engaged, but not completely. In other words, I can't move the shift lever far enough right to install the hitch pin. I have tried wiggling the shift rod up and down and side to side, but the pin won't go all the way through. If you disconnect it from the shift rod, the pin slides freely when you move the shift lever right.

Is there any special trick to this?

Thanks.

I figured it out. I took a long brass drift and tapped lightly on the port side of the shift lever. That managed to get the pin all the way through.
