Couple weeks ago the rectifier went out, so I replaced it. After about 20 hours running over several weeks, the new one went out today. Could it be the stator is outputing too many amps? The stator was replaced last year by the previuos owner. I talked to the repair shop who did it before I bought the boat and they confirmed it was replaced. The wiring diagram show stator to rectifier to battery. Is there anything else besides the stator that could cause this problem?
Any ideas will be appreciated.

Jerry

A battey that will not hold a charge or to many accessories hooked to the battery could cause the charging side of the staor to work harder and therfor the the regulator to work hard. You can test with a amp meter and see how many amps the battery is pulling to keep a charge. Will get back to you with the amp specs.

DTS, the battery is also new, and holds a charge at 12.5 V, ie: no problem charging. At 3500 rpm I put a volt meter on the lead from the rectifier at the battery and the charge rate was 14.5- 15 V before the rectifier blew. But never put an amp meter on it. The only accesory I use is a fish finder. Thanks for your help.

Jerry

Still need help. Although the manual sez the motor does not have a voltage regulator, mine does. Took the regulator out (no part # on it) and to the parts dealer and he sez it's a regulator for a 6 cylinder v6 that uses the same rectifier as my 50 HP. The regulator charges at the high end (15v) once the motor is warmed up. I guess I'm just spooked since I have blown 2 rectifiers at $40 apiece and am afraid to blow another one. The second one that blew is the one I put in and had melt down at one of the stator terminals. A mechanic at the dealer says the only time he's seen that it was because of loose connections and it arcd.

Is it possible the first one blew from old age and the second due to my sloppy work, and i'm spooked for nothing?

Jerry (retired and living on fixed income :p )
