This thing is driving me crazy!!!!!!! I am a seasoned driveability technician and have over 20 yrs experience with marine and auto engines and related systems. The symptom is when the boat is operated at 3300-4000 rpm for 5+ minutes, rpm starts to drop, the engine loses power and then backfires and dies. You can start it right back up and it runs ok, but then runs slightly rough. Fuel pump, anti-siphon valve, fuel filter/separator, carburetor, ignition control module/pickup coil (prestolite), ignition coil, spark plug wires, plugs all replaced. Even bypassed fuel tank with external unit-problem still there! Next step is manual wiring reistance check of all circuits. Any ideas would be appreciated!

I had a similar problem when I converted my engine to electronic ignition. Finally bypassed the factory wire from +12v to coil with another wire and the problem was solved.

What engine make, year and model is this. I don't recall any ignition modules fitted on engines with prestolite distributors.

what did you find out? I smoked my coil and electronic ignition by leaving the key on all night last year. New parts worked for a week or two then the coil went out ( it was an auto parts store cheepy). So I bought what I thought was the right one on-line and it is now OVERHEATING after pulling a skiier for a ride and the boat wont idle or start and the coil is hot hot hot to the touch. Once it cools down the boat runs like new. Arg! Is your coil hot? Weard that it is mounted right on top of the engine...
