1992 Yamaha 85 HP no | broken reverse gear

Looking for ideas on why my reverse gear will not work on my 1992 Yamaha 85HP outboard. It stopped engaging suddenly while on the water.

Checked cables and all seem fine. Prop will spin with dog ears on land, but no thrust in water.

Any helpful ideas would be appreciated.

Definitely no expert on Yammie's but there look to be some pretty good guys here. In searching a bit looks like might be 1 of 3 thing, but I also plead ignorance. Have seen simple cable adjustment, Something with the reverse gear in the lower unit being worn or having slipped out of position from the clutch, or what might be the most noted issue in this generation/age of Yamaha's which is a rusted/twisted shift shaft. Does it grind? Forward and neutral work? Shift lever in correct position or difficult to shift. Suggest wait for the experts here. Good luck.
