I have been having some low end issue with my 150 Evinrude. When ideling, it was spitting and quiting. I put some Evinrude engine turner in the system. The stuff I have is the stuff you inject in thru the tire stem valve by the carbs. I let it set four hours then hooked the muffs on, and it seem to help. After a little time on the water the problem would come back. Yesterday I removed all six carbs but did not remove the plate they mount on. I completely striped each carb down as my serviced manual said and clean all ports jets and blew 25psi of air thru each port. All gaskets looked good and I did not see any dirt. I also blew air thru all ports in the plate that the carbs mount to. After putting her back together, it ran allot better. It did not stall when starting out like before but it still in not right. If I push in on the key to give her a little choke while taking off, she smooths right out. (She needs some gas on low end) Should I have removed the mounting plate and cleaned some of those ports and check valves? My service manual says I should also check the Recirculation System by pulling the hose on each cylinder and peform a bubble test. If I had a plugged cylinder head fitting would this cause my problem? Or do I need to get to my intake Manifold and clean the check valves? I also had some tell me to just put in Seafoam in the gas and that should finish the job for me. What do you think about the Seafoam?

Just so you have all the details, once I come out of the hole the motor runs perfect. WOT, no skips and runs strong.

What direction should I head in next. Maybe all new rebuilt kits for the carbs?????? They just look so clean and all gaskets look good. I think I cured most of my problem (Not All of It) when I blew compressed air thur the manifold. Try the SeaFoam????????????????

Re: 1993 150hp V6 Intruder

Thanks Jim for your reply.

I did not soak the carbs in cleaner because they are all plastic, I was quite surprised that they were all plastic being as old as the motor is, 1993. When I had each carb apart I did remove everythink I could remove and cleaned and blew out with air. Like I said, very clean when I took them apart. Not much gas sets in my boat, I fish bass tournaments. I am putting in new gas about every weekend. I did remove the recirculate lines last night and did the bubble test like the manual said. Everything checked out ok. So are you ok with SeaFoam as a preventive maintenance? Or should I just use the Evinrude engine tuner. I am sure some of this is my fault, I did not run engine tuner thur the motor for the past four years. I always use to do it every year. But the boat was running excellent so I did not use it until this showed up. Any other ideas? Maybe I have a gasket leaking on one of my carbs, Maybe I should get six rebuild kits? Like I said before, the motor is running ok, it is just not right on low end.

Re: 1993 150hp V6 Intruder

Update: As you read above I was still have a little dead issue come out of the hole on my 150 after cleaning my carbs. I did give her one more dose of Evinrude engine turner. This time I let it set the full 16 hrs before restarting. ( THE CAN SAID 4 TO 16 HRS) It looks like this did the trick. I will know better after a few more times on the water, but when taking her out last night, she was back to normal. I need to get back into using the stuff a couple times a season like my dad use to. He owned the boat before me and he was big on the Evinrude engine tuner. I guess like most dads, he new what he was doing. I just have never been big on additives, but I guess I am wrong when it comes to the Evinrude engine tuner.

Still no ones has given their opinion on SeaFoam added to the gas. Does anyone have advice on SeaFoam? I know a couple guys in my bass club us it.

you can soak the plastic carbs in laquer thinner. I also spray carb cleaner through all passages...take the carb apart, no need to soak the bowl. I love sea foam..it does break down/prevent deposits from mixed fuel. If you use it every tank full you will probably never have to clean your carbs again...also works great for decarbbing your motor when used in high concentrations and prevents carbon build up with regular low concentration use. stabil makes a good marine/ethanol formula fuel additive that can be used instead of sea foam.

Sparkie,

Thanks for your reply. I do use the blue stabil but it does not say marine. Is there a difference? I see stabil has the reg Blue, marine blue and red. Life would have been a lot better if the ethanol thing went away!!!!!! Just one more thing we have to pay for. I say if there is a law that all gas has to have 10% ethanol, then the goverment should pay for all the additives, not use boaters. We have gas, snacks, fishing rod, tackle and once in a while a few beer to buy. LOLOLOLOL

yes ethanol is a bad idea all around..fed gov is stuck on stupid and it cost us many $$$$$..but what can you do?? move to Cuba maybe...LOL...not sure if there is a diff between the stabils...maybe the marine has some water resistant stuff in it..I use the marine/ethanol type..it is blue.

You can soak the plactic parts of a carb in Evinrude Engine Tuner for as long as you want and it won't hurt them. Glad you finally followed the directions on the can for 16 hrs. If it improves do it again. Won't hurt. Done it many times myself.
