Hi guys. This is my first post. I have a pair of mint 93 200hp CR on my 25' whitewater. Last weekend the port motor started popping in and out of gear on plane. It would rev high for a sec and then slam into gear again. I backed down and took a look at the linkage. All is well there so I am guessing it's in the lower unit. Maybe the shift dog? Anyways, I tugged on the prop and there is about 1/4" play (forward and backwards). No play up and down. That is significantly more play than the other motor so I am thinking that is BAD. I used the starboard motor to get back on plane and used the port motor about 30% throttle. It ran fine like that but as soon as I brought the throttle up even with the other motor, the problem occurred again.

1) Should I invest in the tools to pull this thing apart and rebuild it myself?
2) Can anyone shed some light on what the problem might be?
3) The prices on rebuilt units are about 1500.00 with core exchange and I am guessing the other lower unit will be next. (3000.00 total)

Thanks

Welcome to iboats.... Did you drain the lower unit and check for metal shavings in the oil? I would do that first although the problem you described sounded pretty severe. Do you have a Mercury service manual that covers your engine? They completely detail lower unit disassembly and the tools required. That should give you a good idea of whether or not you want to tackle this job yourself.

I think I would also check for a spun hub on the prop...............Jerry

how do you check to see if the hub is spun? They are mirage props with the hub that pops out. This is my first pair of props like this so I am not sure what to look for.

I'm not familiar with that prop, but you can mark the prop by scribeing a line from the prop shaft out to the outside of the hub and run it again. If it blows out again the marks won't line up and you will know it is slipping..............Jerry
