I have a 1993 Bayliner, 22’ bow rider. It has a mercruiser 5.0 (GM) and a brand new alpha one (7 hours). I took it the to the lake for the first time and cruised around for an hour with no problems. When I killed the engine at the dock it would never restart to trailer it.

I got it home and pulled the cover off and there was milky oil everywhere, it seems to have bubbles out of the carb and was all over the engine and the engine bay. Pulled the dipstick and it is full the the brim with milky oil. I checked the fuel filter and it was clean and I check each cylinder and they were all clean.

My question is: is this motor toast?

And if it is, my uncle has a 350 mercruiser (GM) from a 1992 model boat that runs and he would give me. Would that motor just swap over perfectly? I am worried about the 350 being “too much” for the outdrive I recently installed.

Don't know if its toast but it probably needs a rebuld

Not an issue, the Alpha can handle more HP then the 350

That said, you need to find out what caused the first motor to croak

Might be something as simple as an intake manifold that lost a gasket or rusted out. Gotta go look.

The 350 would be just fine in there. Figure out the 5.0L and sell it off.

Pulled motor, block is cracked on both sides. Uncle flaked out on giving/selling me his motor. I have a 80s model impala with a 5.0 that runs good, it is possible for me to install that engine in the boat? I have been searching for a rebuilt marine 5.0 and have had no luck.

Ayuh,...... Welcome Aboard,...... It wasn't winterized, froze, 'n busted the block,......

I'd count on the intake manifold, 'n exhaust manifolds bein' junk too,......

Who winterized it last time,..??

The '80s motor can be made to work, but there were a few changes through that time frame,.....
1980, What,..?? '86 was a big change year,......

A motor out of a car will have a car camshaft, not a truck camshaft. That, along with head gaskets and coreplugs will need changing. Don't forget to swap over to a marine water pump, the ones that are used in cars will rust out very quickly with water instead of coolant in them. As Bondo stated, there are some significant changes in the 80's, so have to define the motor in question.

I would not use your 305 in your 80's impala as that will be a 1985 or earlier 2-piece RMS motor. to many things to buy to make it work, including the lack of accessory drive holes in the heads.

find a running 350 from a 1992-1995 truck and use the block and heads. if you get a truck with a stick, you can even leave the flywheel on it.

most pick-n-pull salvage yards are $225-$350

or upgrade to a vortec and get a 96 and later 350 from a truck

you will need new marine exhaust manifolds, marine intake, marine water pump, etc. anyway, so now is the time to upgrade to a vortec motor. however you can swap over your existing accessories.

a new 350 long block is about $3000, your local machine shop can build you one from a core for about $2200.

You can check out my build thread in this sub-forum, I did similar. Went from a 305 with a cracked junk block, replaced with a vortec 350. In my case the 305 was also a vortec, so that saved me a few small headaches. But overall it's a straightforward process, it really is as simple as you'd think. You can reuse most of the bolt on parts from your current engine. Things like all the front accessories, distributor and ignition system, starter, all the wiring and harness from the boat. I built my 350 from an old truck motor, and swapped in the cam from the 305 since they were both hydraulic roller motors, and the marine cam is a bit better than the stock truck cam.

Once I had the new motor built, I pulled the old motor, and put them on stands side by side, and pulled parts off one, and put them onto the other so I knew I had it all right. Once I got it all dropped in, and the distributor timing close and valves set correctly (took a bit) it ran great. Been on the water several times already and I'm extremely happy with it!
