1993 70hp Yamaha water pump change

How do you disconnect the shift rod when dropping the lower unit to change the water pump? Does it just slide out or do you have to disconnect the rod so you don't break the seal for the lower gear casing? 1993 70hp two stroke Yamaha.

It should just slide out. When you reinstall the lower unit, dont forget to make sure the shift linkage is reengaged.
